How to Draw a Bald Eagle Head

The American bald eagle, which was once listed on the endangered species list, is on a comeback after seeing its numbers quadruple since 2009, according to a recent report by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Bald eagles reached an all-time low of 417 known nesting pairs in 1963 in the lower 48 states. But after decades of protection, including banning the pesticide DDT and placement of the eagle on the endangered species list in more than 40 states, the bald eagle population has continued to grow. The bald eagle was removed from the list of threatened or endangered species in 2007.

When it comes to drawing a bald eagle, famous for their fierce look, it's fun to do a close up of their amazing face. A profile view lets you admire their strong beak and intense eyes. Drawing the entire body is nice when you need something to go with a report, but this tutorial is perfect for getting up close and personal.

A cropping like this of the turned body (which is not symmetrical) might seem like a more sophisticated pose for young students to take on. Breaking the body parts down into easy steps though, make it easier than students may think.

Please note that those dashed guides lines really help students get started in the middle of the paper, and this draw something that fills the page. Two quick folds to make creases in the center of the paper are all they need to make your own.

RECOMMDEND MATERIALS

  • Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase. Buying the pre-sharpened ones will save busy teachers a lot of time.
  • Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tip erasers, especially when erasing leftover pencil lines after tracing.
  • Black Sharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
  • Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They also have a some nice brown shades that Crayola does not have unless you buy their larger boxes.
  • Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that always works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellow colors that seem a bit richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.
